Why does the definition of “American” keep getting rewritten by people who resent Americans, but who are also trying desperately to stretch the word’s meaning just enough to wrap themselves in it?
Not everyone wants to be American, of course (I see you, French people), but “American” remains the #1 citizenship choice of most people seeking new lives. But the reasons so many want to be American has nothing much to do with what you and I consider the priceless blessing of being born American.
Most of the illegal immigrants I’ve spent time with in Los Angeles are, like Democrats, not especially interested in the Bill of Rights. They aren’t applying for Publius Fellowships at the Claremont Institute. They’ve never heard of George Washington and have no idea who fought in World War II or the Civil War. They’re blissfully ignorant of the oceans of blood and sweat it took to carve America out of the wilderness and calve it off the British Kingdom.
They have no idea exactly what it is that makes it so much better than their dysfunctional homelands; I guess we just got lucky with a good piece of land.
