Supervillains is not another book about “wokeness.”

The Supervillains don’t fall neatly into stereotypical categories that are thrown around online these days, like “the Left” or “the Jews” or “white liberal women” or “Democrats.” Those labels are basically meaningless. American Supervillains are a fairly diverse group: they come from every walk of life, and every political party.

What they do share is an end goal: to subvert old-fashioned Americanism and replace it and its people with a new, worse thing. This is a dark and frightening prospect! But what I found as I wrote the book was that up close, when you examine supervillains closely, you realize that they are prime objects of ridicule. They are in many cases ridiculous, even hilarious.

Supervillains has a serious point to make, but I also wanted to make it as fun to read as I could.

Mockery is man’s most potent weapon, after all. Which is good, since it’s the only one I know how to use.

Now let me tell you a little bit about the book and why you should read it. Warning: it is a lot different from my first book, Domestic Extremist, but fans of that book will, I hope, enjoy this one very much.

Meet the Supervillains

A few years ago, I started seeing the same names appear online, in news stories, and in horror tweets. There seemed to be a large and seemingly ubiquitous cast of characters busy churning out bad ideas and turning them into destructive content, policies, and behaviors.

Some of the names were world famous, but others were unknowns, operating in the shadows, shielded by their corporate sponsors, government agencies, or institutions. Maybe they deserved the spotlight. Was there any way for me to help make them a little more famous? To raise awareness, and maybe sound the alarm?

I’m not good for much, besides washing the fam’s dirty laundry, and writing my little screeds—and I’m all out of dirty laundry.

Thus, Supervillains the book was born.

Our present-day supervillains are for the most part well-educated, adept at manipulating media to share their ideas, and devilishly clever (not all of them; some are, I admit, jackasses and ninnies).

But they do seem to share a few things in common. One, an overwhelming confidence in their own mission, with zero doubts, no second guessing, and total commitment. They don’t suffer from imposter syndrome. The supervillains, you see, think they are superheroes. They are convinced of their elite moral and spiritual superiority. They are supervillain supremacists. Question them at your peril.

And two: they seem hell-bent on a larger goal: to transform the United States into a spotless paradise cleansed of people who aren’t buying what they’re selling. In other words, us.

My crack research team and I started compiling lists of potential supervillains that were slowly whittled down to book-length scope. (Supervillains could have been a 20 volume, hand-illuminated, leather-bound set, but my publisher shot me down.)

Then we set about categorizing the cast of characters into a taxonomy of sorts. Each chapter includes a dive into a selection of supervillains. Some names you'll know, many you haven’t heard of. Yet.

To paraphrase Nancy Pelosi, you’ll have to read the book to see who’s in it.

You will learn about Lesser Villains. You will get a Supervillain Lexicon, so you can learn to speak Supervillain.

And of course, you’ll get a peek at some of our favorite Supervillain Dynasties.
