The last time cities rang out with the demand for “No Kings,” a guillotine was erected in front of the Paris City Hall. The entire leadership class had their noggins lopped off in front of cheering rabble.

Right now, historically speaking, we’re in the moment that comes just before that. At the Los Angeles No Kings protest, I saw crowds of thousands screaming and waving signs that all but demanded the violent overthrow of a sitting president. “No Kings!” they demanded of someone, somewhere.

Not a single protester in the crowd seemed to realize that if Donald Trump were their king, there would be no protest.

Of course, the mood at the protest was the usual: righteous anger and jubilation. To my eyes, the crowd looked mostly harmless. There were lots of average white Boomers in big hats and fanny packs, and plenty of younger people with all the markings of a “woke” sensibility.
